MADISONVILLE, Ky. (Aug. 17, 2019) — As a reminder, a contractor for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) plans a westbound traffic shift and restriction on the Wendell H. Ford Western Kentucky Parkway at the U.S. 231 Beaver Dam Exit 75 interchange in Ohio County starting Monday, August 19. The project, aimed at replacing the Western Kentucky Parkway/U.S. 231 overpass, will include significant restrictions for traffic on both the WK Parkway and U.S. 231 at the interchange.
This work zone will require all westbound parkway traffic to take the exit ramp to the U.S. 231 intersection. Motorists who wish to continue westbound on the parkway will then have to re-enter the parkway using the exit 75 entry ramp. A traffic signal will control traffic flow on the ramps and along U.S. 231 where they intersect.
Work will initially include overnight closures of U.S. 231 at the Exit 75 interchange. These overnight closures will run from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. (CDT) for about three nights to allow demolition of the existing overpass. There will be no marked detour during these overnight closures.
Message boards are placed near the work zone to alert motorists about the project.
Eastbound traffic on the Western Kentucky Parkway and the eastbound U.S. 231 entry and exit ramps will function normally.
The initial round of work for this bridge rehabilitation project will replace the superstructure and deck of the parkway’s westbound overpass. The contractor will re-use the existing support structure. Replacement of the main bridge structure will allow improved clearance for U.S. 231.
This first round of rehab work is required to be completed by December 15. The contractor will then return to the work zone in spring 2020 for similar rehabilitation work on the eastbound overpass.
In an average day, approximately 10,000 vehicles travel this section of the Western Kentucky Parkway, and about 7,500 vehicles travel this section of U.S. 231.
Intech Contracting, LLC, is the prime contractor on this $4,616,966 group bridge rehabilitation and deck maintenance project. The contract also includes deck overlay work at other bridges along the Western Kentucky Parkway to be scheduled at a later date. The target completion date for all work in this group contract is Aug. 30, 2020.
